Celebrating Pride with Prism Boutique

June is Pride Month - and we’re celebrating by highlighting some of our favorite LGBTQIA+ creators and to see how they’re celebrating, the organizations they support, and which styles they’re currently loving at Prism.

Tell us a little about your partner and some of your favorite things about them.

Alexia is the most present partner! She goes above and beyond for the people close to her and I feel so lucky to be one of those people. Not only is she so cool and so much fun, but she’s one of the most thoughtful people I’ve ever met. The moment I met her, I knew she was going to be a major presence in my life.

What LGBTQIA+ issues are most important to you?

I moved to Austin last year, so I’ve learned a bit more about the politics happening here in Texas. In the last year, Texas received a record number (30+!) of anti-trans bills introduced to the state’s House and Senate. (Luckily, all have been defeated now.) Most recently, Texas Gov. Greg Abbott issued a letter saying that gender-affirming medical procedures would now constitute as child abuse and directed the Texas Department of Family and Protective Services to investigate any instances of so-called “abuse” and report them. It’s incredibly disheartening to hear about this blatant attack on trans youth here. It hits extra hard after learning about a recent study that transgender children usually don’t change their mind after they transition. Out of 317 children between 3 and 12 who got surveyed, the vast majority still identified as their new gender 5 years later. Take that, Greg Abbott!

How will you be celebrating?

This year I’m celebrating Pride with my business, Me-est Me. We’re hosting a giveaway with 13 other queer-owned brands through 6/15 and donating 10% of profits from each journal sold to the ACLU for the month of June!

One charity or organization others should know about and support?

The Transgender Education Network of Texas is the largest policy organization in the state led by trans people of color. TENT provides gender-inclusive training for state leaders and engages in policy advocacy.

How did you and your partner meet?  I met my partner, Itza, at a friend's gathering in Oakland, CA years ago. I was the first to approach them ;)

What LGBTQIA+ issues are most important to you?

There are many issues that are important to us, but protecting and expanding trans rights is one we feel very passionate about. Currently, there are states that are attacking Trans youth and making it a felony to provide gender-affirming care for transgender children, and it's important that we combat this legislation for our community who is seeking the opportunities to live a healthy and confident life.

How will you be celebrating Pride?

We will be celebrating Pride by attending some Pride celebrations here in San Francisco. We will also be celebrating by having intentional time together and going on cute dates prior to Pride Weekend which is on June 25th.

One charity or organization others should know about and support?

LYRIC is an LGBTQQ youth organization whose mission is to build community and inspire positive social change through education enhancement, career training, health promotion, and leadership development with LGBTQQ youth, their families, and allies of all races, classes, genders, and abilities. They do great work and need all the support to continue to provide these services.

Can you describe how your identity and race have influenced your art and you as an artist?

My race and identity have more influence on me as an artist than on my art itself. As a Black, non-gender conforming human, it’s rare to go a day without some sort of instance of prejudice. So when I create, I use my art as a way to express freedom and limitless transcendence. (Breaking from the binary.) I often say, I paint pictures with my poems and tell stories with my paintings.

What LGBTQIA+ issues are you most passionate about?

Any and all issues surrounding the Trans community. Specifically the lack of equity and equality Black trans women receive all around the world. I am passionate about creating safe spaces and about sourcing unbiased physicians, both mental and physical, in order to provide a better quality of life.

How will you be celebrating pride?

I will be celebrating pride this year by keeping it lowkey and enjoying time at the house with my cat and my love!

One charity or organization others should know about and support?

The charity I feel everyone should know about is called G.L.I.T.S, which stands for Gays & Lesbians Living In A Transgender Society. They’re a grassroots organization dedicated to supporting the LGBTQIA+ community on a global scale and are advocating for the health, wellness, and inclusion of transgender people in our society.
