Staying Local: A Day at Sonder City Center

For our most recent shoot, we stayed close to home. Set in the heart of Long Beach, Sonder City Center is a newly reimagined boutique hotel that blends mid-century character with modern design in the most effortless way. It also happens to be our new favorite place to stay.

Originally built in 1962 as the City Center Motel, this mid-century gem was a quintessential roadside inn and has long been part of the neighborhood’s story. Thanks to a thoughtful refresh by LA-based architecture firm Omgivning, it now feels like a love letter to Long Beach—equal parts laid-back and design-forward. Think clean lines, soft neutrals, sunlit spaces, and a courtyard that was made for golden hour.

Guests can spend the morning by the pool, wander the landscaped courtyard, or head to Olive & Rose, the onsite café and wine bar created by Michelin-starred chef Philip Pretty. From the food to the furnishings, every detail feels intentional—nothing overdone, just beautifully considered.

Whether you're visiting Long Beach or looking for a local staycation, Sonder City Center offers a quiet, beautifully designed place to land. You can learn more or book a stay here.
